About Our Program

The Department of Dermatology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NewYork Presbyterian Hospital offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Dermatopathology. Candidates who have completed residency training in either Dermatology or Pathology in the US or Canada are eligible to apply. The fellowship period is one year and requires board eligibility in Dermatology or Pathology.

Training and Curriculum

The fellows will undergo training in various disciplines such as immunopathology, molecular dermatopathology, digital pathology, direct immunofluorescence, tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, genomics, and laboratory management.

The program benefits from a strong partnership between the departments of Dermatology and Pathology & Cell Biology. It also features unique subspecialty clinics in dermatology such as a cutaneous oncology program, a specialized cutaneous lymphoma clinic, a MOHS surgery program, a pediatric dermatology program, a hair disorders research and clinical section, an immunobullous disorder center, and one of the strongest research programs in Dermatology in the country.

Education & Research Opportunities

The Division of Dermatopathology receives around 140,000 biopsies per year, along with approximately 700 direct immunofluorescence specimens and nearly 1,000 consultations. The majority of consultation referrals are focused on cutaneous lymphoma and melanocytic pathology. Fellows are responsible for reviewing both internal and referral consultation material, participating in various conferences and didactic activities, and engaging in clinical and translational research opportunities. At least one research project must be completed before graduation. Fellows also have a strong educational mission, actively teaching dermatology and pathology residents as well as medical students. They work closely with other ACGME-accredited fellowship programs within the department, such as MOHS and pediatric dermatology.

The faculty mentors actively participate in various educational programs, such as clinical and fellowship conferences. They possess extensive experience publishing scientific articles in well-known journals and textbooks related to dermatology. These publications include Lever’s Histopathology of the Skin, Hematopathology of the Skin, Pediatric Dermatopathology, and Clinical Dermatology.
